Add your first recipe

Open the recipe editor and type straight onto the page: title, description, photo, timings, ingredients, and steps.

The recipe editor is not a form. It is the recipe page itself, with every piece of text editable where it sits — so what you are looking at while you write is roughly what a reader will get.

Open the editor

  1. From Create post, choose Create Recipe. You can also press Add new post on the dashboard home or on Edit posts and choose Create Recipe.

Nothing is saved yet. The recipe exists only in the page until you press Save draft or Publish recipe.

Fill the page in, top to bottom

  • Title. What the dish is called. Specific beats clever — “Lemon garlic butter chicken” is easier to find than “Weeknight magic”.
  • Short description. One sentence. It appears under the title, on your recipe index, and as the description search engines show.
  • Web address. Filled in from the title as you type. Edit it if you want, and it stops following the title from then on.
  • Photo of the finished dish. Upload one or paste a link. Add photos to a recipe
  • Prep, Cook, Extra and Serves. Minutes and a number of servings. Total is added up for you and cannot be typed into. Leave any of them blank and it simply does not appear.
  • Introduction. Optional. A short paragraph before the ingredients.
  • Ingredients. One per line. Add and edit ingredients
  • Instructions. Numbered steps. Write recipe instructions
  • Notes. Optional. Substitutions, make-ahead advice, the thing that always goes wrong.

The controls on the page

Anywhere something can be added you get a + button that says what it adds — + Add ingredient, + Add step. Rows you can move or delete show ↑, ↓ and ✕ when you hover or tab into them; on a touchscreen they are always visible.

Pressing Enter in an ingredient starts the next ingredient. In a step, Enter starts a new line inside the same step.

Save it

Press Save draft. A draft is visible only to you — nobody reaches it from your blog. From there you can preview it or publish it.
