Image upload problems

What each upload error means, and the two limits that cause almost all of them.

Almost every failed upload is one of two things: the file is too big, or it is not one of the four formats Savorible accepts. The message on the button says which.

“That image is … — the limit is …”

The file is over 20 MB. Photos from a recent phone camera are usually well under it; files this large are normally exports from a camera or an edit saved at full quality.

Open the photo in any editor or your phone’s photo app and export it smaller. A recipe photo about 2000 pixels wide is more than enough for a web page, and a smaller file also loads faster for your readers.

“Unsupported image type …”

Savorible accepts JPEG, PNG, WebP and AVIF. The common surprises are:

  • HEIC / HEIF — the default on iPhones. Share or export the photo as JPEG, or change the camera format to “Most Compatible” in your iPhone’s camera settings.
  • GIF, BMP, TIFF — export as JPEG or PNG.
  • PDF or a screenshot of a photo — save the image itself instead.

“You must be signed in to upload images”

Your session expired while the page was open. Open your dashboard in another tab to sign in again, then come back and retry the upload. Anything you had typed is still on the page.

“Your free trial has ended”

Uploads are refused on a blog that is read-only, along with every other change. Subscribing restores them. How the 30-day free trial works

A pasted image link is rejected

The photo field takes a full web address starting http:// or https://. A file path from your computer, a data: URL, or a link to a page containing the photo will all be refused. Right-click the image itself and copy the image address.

The photo uploaded but does not appear

  • Check you saved the recipe. An upload attaches the photo to the recipe you are editing, but like everything else in the editor it is only written when you press Save draft or Publish recipe.
  • If it is a linked photo, open the link in a new tab. If it does not load there either, the site you linked from has moved or blocked it — upload the photo instead.
  • If it shows in the editor but not on your blog, the recipe is still a draft, or the change has not been published. Publish a recipe
